International Friendships Day

Friendships Day is one the most celebrated day amongst teenagers. During my school and college days even I used to put efforts to make personalised bands for my special friends. But never had I thought then that, why was this day celebrated and who initiated it.

But now as Aaradhya is 16 months old, and interested enough in listening to stories, I felt I should take a little effort and make sure atleast she has basic knowledge about the days she is celebrating.

So here is a small detail about Why, When and How is International Friendships Day Celebrated.

Who initiated Friendships day?T

Theidea of Friendships was first introduced by the founder of Hallmark cards, Joyce Hal, in 1920. The day was celebrated by exchanging greeting cards, but it was in 1958 that Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho coined the term ‘Friendship Day’ and started a foundation called The World Friendship Crusade.

When is Friendships Day Celebrated?

In 2011, the General Assembly of the UN declared July 30 as the International Day of Friendship. However, different countries celebrate this day on different dates. For example, in India it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August, whereas in Oberlin, Ohio Friendship Day is celebrated on April 8 every year.

How is it celebrated ?

In India, mostly the school and college kids celebrate it by tying readymade or personalised bands to their close friends. The ones who have passed their teens and are busy with their careers, catch up with their long lost friends and celebrate their bond of friendship.

Personally, I am not a person celebrating all these occasions. But as you grow, life gets you busy and it is these small occasions that help you re connect with your family and friends.

Infact before Aaradhya came, I made sure to meet up my friends on this day.

So what are your plans for today???
