When is it celebrated ?
The festival falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Krishna Paksha or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadon. This year the day will be celebrated on August 12.

How is it celebrated ?
On the day of Ashtami, krishna pooja is done and at midnight Krishna's birth is celebrated. People visit temples at midnight, celebrations are done at home by grooming the Idol of Krishna with new clothes and jewellery, making the idol sit in cradle, singing devotional songs through out the night, offering wholesome variety of food, etc. The next day is followed by Dahi Handi. Krishna was Makhan lover, also called makhan chor. He used to break the handis containing makhan and eat up all the makhan. So dahi handi is celebrated as a token for his love for Makhan.
